Brixworth Farming Company (BFC) in Northants was set up in 2000 to serve the arable contracting needs of its shareholders: T C Matts & Sons of Creaton, W F Saunders & Partners of Hanging Houghton, R A Turney of Brixworth. Lowther Farms joined in 2001 and Cottesbrooke Estate Company in 2007. BFC supplies all the labour and machinery for 2500 hectares of arable land including some third party contracting. The rotation currently adopted is winter wheat - winter oilseed rape - winter wheat - winter beans (heavy land) or poppies (light land).

The gross margins of all crops grown on shareholder land are pooled so there is a common interest in maximising returns. For cereals BFC operates a non inversion tillage system using a 6-metre Simba Solo ST with a Challenger 95 followed by an 8-metre Vaderstat Rapid drill behind the same tractor. For rape the preferred option is to broadcast the seed above a 6-metre soil loosener. The beans and poppy ground is ploughed.

All N, P and K Fertiliser and lime are applied variably according to field and crop needs using either a mounted Kuhn Axis spreader or a KRM Bredal K85 trailed spreader

Harvest management is simplified using 2 Claas 600 Lexion combines with 35 ft headers and chaser bins. The grain is removed from the field to one of two local central stores from where it is marketed in a pool.
