Farmeco UK Ltd was formally set up in 2000 as a joint venture, however some of the partners had been swapping contract services for a number of years prior to this. Today Farmeco comprises of four land owning directors, W.A.Hutton & son, P.H.Lamin farms, S.Clarke Farms Ltd and T.Farr Hall Farm who have all committed there land to the venture long term. Acreage extends to 3200 in house and a further 800 third party whole farm contracting. Gross margins are shared on a pro rata basis, equalising both risk and benefit making it a very level and transparent business. The farms are run on a day to day business by Keith Challen who acts as MD at board level and farms manager on the ground. Cropping is very simple and is based on a wheat, rape rotation. All farms are block cropped and single crops per farm to keep things efficient. Min-tillage is used across the whole acreage and is based around a John Deere 9520 doing all the cultivations and all the drilling using an 8m Horsch Terrano and press then a Simba freeflow to drill with. This is backed up by our only other tractor a JCB fastrac 3230 which rolls and carts corn. Combining is taken care of by a Claas lexion 600 which is on its limit with 4000 acres to cut. Carting is with our Fastrac and another hired in for 6 weeks. Spraying and fertilising falls to a 240hp 4000lt 36m Unimog. Labour is kept to a minimum with Keith and Kevin supported by 3 casual staff in the summer. Farmeco’s objective was to provide a profitable sustainable future for its directors, to share risk and to put fun back into farming!
